چکیده

Previously, “Deformable organisms” were introduced as a novel paradigm for medical image analysis that uses artificial life modelling concepts. Deformable organisms were designed to complement the classical bottomup deformable models methodologies (geometrical and physical layers), with top-down intelligent deformation control mechanisms (behavioral and cognitive layers). However, a true physical layer was absent and in order to complete medical image segmentation tasks, deformable organisms relied on pure geometry-based shape deformations guided by sensory data, prior structural knowledge, and expert-generated schedules of behaviors. In this paper we introduce the use of physics-based shape deformations within the deformable organisms framework yielding additional robustness by allowing intuitive real-time user guidance and interaction when necessary. We present the results of applying our physics-based deformable organisms, with an underlying dynamic spring-mass mesh model, to segmenting and labelling the corpus callosum in 2D midsagittal magnetic resonance images.

Evaluation of deformable image registration in HDR gynecological brachytherapy

Introduction: In brachytherapy, as in external radiotherapy, image-guidance plays an important role. For GYN treatments it is standard to acquire at least CT images and preferably MR images prior to each treatment and to calculate the dose of the day on each set of images. Then, the dose to the target and to the organs at risk (OAR) is calculated with worst case scenario from I...

Deformable Organisms for Automatic Medical Image Analysis

We introduce a new approach to medical image analysis that combines deformable model methodologies with concepts from the field of artificial life. In particular, we propose "deformable organisms", autonomous agents whose task is the automatic segmentation, labeling, and quantitative analysis of anatomical structures in medical images. Analogous to natural organisms capable of voluntary movemen...

A Hybrid 3D Colon Segmentation Method Using Modified Geometric Deformable Models

Introduction: Nowadays virtual colonoscopy has become a reliable and efficient method of detecting primary stages of colon cancer such as polyp detection. One of the most important and crucial stages of virtual colonoscopy is colon segmentation because an incorrect segmentation may lead to a misdiagnosis.  Materials and Methods: In this work, a hybrid method based on Geometric Deformable Models...

Towards Intelligent Deformable Models for Medical Image Analysis

Medical imaging continues to permeate the practice of medicine, but automated yet accurate segmentation and labeling of anatomical structures continues to be a major obstacle to computerized medical image analysis (MIA). Deformable models, with its profound roots in estimation theory, optimization, and physics-based dynamical systems, represent a powerful approach to the general problem of medi...

Deformable Organisms for Medical Image Analysis

teraction, global-to-local deformations, shape statistics, setting low-level parameters, and incorporating new forces or energy terms. However, incorporating expert knowledge to automatically guide deformations can not be easily and elegantly achieved using the classical deformable model low-level energy-based fitting mechanisms. In this chapter we review Deformable Organisms, a decision-making...
